Office of the Commissioner

The Texas Education Agency Commissioner's Office provides leadership to schools, oversees the state education agency, and provides coordination with the state legislature, other branches of state government, and the U.S. Department of Education.

Commissioner of Education

Deputy Commissioners of Education

Serving directly under the commissioner of education, ten Deputy Commissioners of Education provide leadership to the Texas Education Agency.

Past Commissioners

A list of all individuals appointed as Commissioner of Education since 1950 is available. Prior to 1950, the role was known as the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and was filled through a statewide election.
